Abstract Expressionist Painting

an art experience in self-expression
for teens & adults

Paint on a big surface with lots of acrylic paint in this day-long workshop for teens and adults. Abstract studies and some sketching will prepare participants to express themselves on a 5' by 2' canvas. This day will include a brief powerpoint history of abstract art and lots of painting, so wear old clothes (acrylic paint does not wash out) and bring a lunch. If you have leftover acrylic/latex paint, bring it along.

Traditional mandala
Tibetian monks

Sand Mandala

in the tradition of buddhist monks

The sand mandala is a centuries-old art discipline involving the creation and destruction of mandalas made from colored sand. There are traditional designs for these temporary mandalas as well as accompanying rituals and materials. Jas Milam, artist/art therapist, will facilitate a collaborative sand mandala of her own design. Anyone who wishes to may take part in this community sand painting. Afterwards the mandala will be offered to the river symbolizing the Buddhist doctrinal belief in the transitory nature of material life. Come observe or participate in this open invitation to be a part of something bigger. Call Jas (423)322.2514

The Kiss    by Jas Milam

He, She, We

an integrating art experience
for men and women

Carl Jung taught that we all have an animus or anima as part of the makeup of our psyches. Men have an anima – or set of attributes associated with The Feminine. Consider the anima the inner “be-er”. Women have an animus – qualities and potentials typically associated with The Masculine. Consider the animus your inner “do-er”. When these parts of us are unknown, unexpressed or undeveloped we feel stuck. When we become willing to look at our inner “marriage” and the state of our inner “do-er” /”be-er” we can clear old patterns and transform our external relationships as well. Art making is a fantastic way to do this. In fact there are beautiful illustrations of Jung’s symbolic and artistic exploration of his own anima in The Red Book.

On Fridays in August, Jas Milam, MAAT will use art making, didactic teaching and metaphor to facilitate this important piece of personal exploration and growth. Weekly sessions include assignments in oil pastels, collage, watercolor pencil and clay as participants discover, transform and integrate these two aspects of self.

Shadow Boxes

a sculptural art experience
for teens & adults

Using a mixed media assemblage process and thoughtful introspection it is possible to make visible and name our darker sides. The more we look and involve ourselves in the creation of these shadow boxes, the more we dredge out into the light the very parts of self that we need to see. A fascinating and transformative look at who we really are will result in a personal and powerful piece of sculpture.

Mandalas

Mandala workshop

Mandalas in art and healing: The Great Round as a Map of the Unconscious

Mandalas are drawings in circle format and have an old and established place in healing - physically, mentally and spiritually. The word mandala is Sanskrit for “circle”. Mandala artwork is represented cross culturally and historically and includes Buddhist sand mandalas, yantras and maybe even crop circles

At this introduction to mandalas Jas Milam, artist and art therapist, will offer participants a chance to create their own mandala and learn more about the use of mandalas in a daily practice. Those attending will also find their mandala on the MARI scale as developed by Joan Kellogg. Come ready to draw and learn how mandalas can be used to map the unconscious mind and promote healing.
